Above is a picture of my dear friends from left Ken Hill, Me!, Bruce Williams & Derek fenner. Four of the most amazing musicians I have ever had the pleasure to create music with. These are the infamous gents you hear on all the Jackanory Music recordings. Hats Off boys & take a bow.
What can I say, except...I’M SORRY!!
I have been neglecting my blog but I do have a legitimate excuse, I think!
I am emigrating to the little Island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic ocean. This procedure has taken up an immense amount of my time with renewing passports, dealing with immigration, attempting to obtain documents from a virtually dysfunctional Dept of Home Affairs in South Africa. Twelve weeks for a birth certificate, really, I have never had to deal with such a useless bunch of ‘good for nothings’. I was sent to no less than four different queues which took numerous hours of waiting.
Meetings with auctioneers for household contents, as well as purchasing packaging crates and a million other tasks. FORGIVE ME!!
In a nut shell, I am totally despondent with South Africa and have no real hope of a positive change in my lifetime. You know, people say,”don’t be so negative!” Well whilst they are all being positive in a desperate kind of way I do not wish to adopt the role of the Titanic’s Fiddler.
We presently have daily power cuts because the National Grid has been neglected and all the good coal has been sold to line some top cat’s pockets with tax payer’s money. Outbursts of xenophobia to such a heinous and disgusting, stomach churning degree in Gauteng and Natal and the destruction of National monuments have broken this camel’s back. Our ‘most gracious’ President lives in a R250, 000, 000.00 estate, flies around the world sipping champagne and invites his pal Robert Mugabe over for a good piss up, whilst the dear Dalai Lama is refused entry to the country for the beautiful Desmond Tutu’s Birthday. Fucking disgraceful. (Excuse the French!) I won’t harp on about what’s wrong, because I not sure it can be fixed.
On a more fruitful note, I will attempt to continue recording music which I write. My dear band members, Derek Fenner, Ken Hill & Bruce Williams have been very understanding to my plight. It was hard to explain this decision and I was tearful to say the least. I have made some amazing friends through music and have some much cherished memories. But, the decision is made and I will carry on with my journey, as crazy as it is. I intend to start writing a biography about all my craziness through the last 50 years which I hope you will all enjoy one day.
Saint Helena is small, very small and only has a population of 4000 people. It does have internet but no cellular phones so is quite an exciting prospect. So it’s Bon Voyage for now. I leave in October & will write some more quirpy little quips before I depart. Once more unto the breach as I always say.
Reggae always cheers me, so this one’s for you all.....
